→ Something people say

"Something people say: "If they say no, crossed out: I've wasted my time changed to: I'll know why."

Being told no is part of being assessed properly.

Medical weight loss starts with an honest assessment, and an honest assessment can end in "not this". If you're not a candidate for weight loss medication, or the program isn't right for you yet, your Nurse Practitioner tells you why, in plain words, and what to do instead. Nobody pushes you either way.

The real answer

You hear why, you hear what to do instead, and nobody pushes you.

Prescription treatment isn't right for everyone. If it isn't right for you, you'll hear it straight from your clinician, with the reason and a next step you can actually use. A no is a result of being assessed properly. It says nothing about how hard you've tried.

"No" can mean a few different things, and you'll know which one.

  • Not this treatment. Prescription treatment isn't the right fit, but a plan built around your week still is.
  • Not yet. Something comes first: a lab result to follow up, a medication to sort out, or a pregnancy you're planning.
  • Not online. You need care from another specialist, so your Nurse Practitioner arranges a referral.
  • Not this program. It's for adults 18 and over, in Ontario at the time of their visits, and not during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or while planning a pregnancy.

The reason comes from your clinician, in plain words.

Not a form letter, and not a vague "you're not eligible". Your Nurse Practitioner explains what they saw in your history, your medications or your labs, and why it changes the answer. Ask as many questions as you need.

Wondering whether a Nurse Practitioner can make this call? In Ontario, yes.

You leave with a next step, not a closed door.

That might be a different approach, a referral, or a conversation with your family doctor. Nurse Practitioners in Ontario arrange referrals, so if something needs another specialist, yours sets it up.

And whatever the answer, you know more than you did: what's going on, what was ruled out, and what would change things.

Whatever the answer, the next step is yours to choose.

A yes doesn't mean you have to start anything, and a no isn't the end of the conversation. You decide what happens next, at your own pace.

Questions, answered plainly.

What happens if I'm not a candidate for weight loss medication?

You hear why, and what your Nurse Practitioner suggests instead. That might be a different approach, a referral, or a conversation with your family doctor. You won't leave with nothing.

Can I find out before the assessment whether it's likely a no?

Partly. The BMI guide and the not-for list are on Is this for me?, and a free call lets you ask a person before you start anything.

What if I disagree with the answer?

Ask. Your Nurse Practitioner walks you through the reasoning, and you're free to talk it over with your family doctor too.

Who isn't the program for?

Anyone under 18; anyone pregnant, breastfeeding or planning a pregnancy; anyone outside Ontario at the time of their visits.

If things change later, can I ask again?

Yes. If your health or your plans change, tell us, and you can be assessed again.
